What is Panacur?
Panacur is a very safe deworming medication that has a very wide spectrum of activity, killing most stomach and intestinal parasites of dogs and cats. It can be very effective against the protozoa called Giardia also.

How is Panacur Administered?
Panacur is packaged as a powder and needs to be given by mouth daily for 3-5 days. It is very important that the entire dose be consumed and that the treatments be given daily for consecutive days. Most patients will eat the product if it is sprinkled on their food, so it is generally quite easy to administer.

What if My Pet Won’t Eat the Dose?
Some animals refuse to eat if Panacur is sprinkled on their food. Because of this, we recommend a test dose to see if your pet will eat it. If your pet refuses to eat its regular food with Panacur on it, try something yummy (like peanut butter, tuna or canned pet food) as long as your veterinarian says that it is okay. If this doesn’t work, you will have to dissolve the powder in water and administer it like you would cough syrup to a child. Our veterinary nurses can supply you with dosing syringes and demonstrate the administration technique.

What is a Test Dose?
Because animals sometimes refuse to eat food with Panacur on it, and because we don’t want you to waste a full dose of Panacur, we recommend a test dose on the first day of treatment. At a normal mealtime, put a small amount of your pet’s food into his/her bowl and apply a very small amount of the Panacur powder to that food. If your pet eats readily, you can put the full dose on his/her regular meal. If your pet refuses the test dose you should not put the full dose on the regular food, but should try one of the techniques mentioned above.
