Animal Care Clinic San Luis Obispo Veterinary Hospital
We have placed a bandage or splint on your pet today. Bandages can be tricky to care for – please heed the following instructions:
• All splints and bandages must be kept dry. Should the bandage become wet, we must replace it as soon as possible. A wet bandage is very dangerous!
•When exercising a dog outdoors, a waterproof covering such as a plastic bag, can be applied to keep the bandage dry. You must remove such coverings when indoors or in dry areas.
•If the bandage appears to have slipped, twisted, been chewed on or otherwise become damaged, or if it gives off a bad odor, bring your pet in for a recheck immediately!
•Chafing may be retarded by daily dusting with baby powder at the top of the bandage or any areas where the bandage rubs the skin.
•Keep exercise to a minimum and avoid slippery floors or stairs.
REMEMBER
A splint/bandage is of value only as long as it is in proper adjustment.
Even the most skillfully applied device cannot remain on an animal indefinitely.
To avoid needless pain, possible damage to the skin or deeper tissues, or other serious consequence, be sure to follow through with all recommended check-ups. An appointment should be made for these visits except under emergency circumstances.
