July 7th is World Chocolate Day. This can be fun for people, but not for pets! Researchers at the University of Cincinnati found that 3 Hershey’s kisses is the perfect amount of chocolate for people to generate feel-good brain chemicals. But pet lovers need to be careful because chocolates contain theobromine, which is a lethal chemical for dogs. While this depends on the type of chocolate, it can take only 0.3 ounces of concentrated chocolate per pound of body weight to be fatal for dogs. Milder types of chocolates vary from 0.5 to 2 ounces. By contrast, you’d have to eat 22 pounds of chocolate in one sitting for it to be fatal – or about 40 chocolate bars. If your dogs eats chocolate, save the packaging and give us or your nearest emergency clinic a call.
